Happy Bank Holiday!

May 4, 2012

We have updated the review of Hobbits in Hythe. Sadly downgraded it from a Silver to a Bronze Award but only because of the décor as the food is excellent and especially the steaks.

(Other reviewed Hythe restaurants).

Last Wednesday three of us went to have a wonder around the interesting little shops in Alresford; it has to be one of the prettiest little towns in Hampshire. We lunched at The Running Horse which has recently been re furbished and serves really good value for money pub grub using locally sourced ingredients and real ales for Camra fans. They have a Hampshire Beer, Hog & Bands Festival this w/end May 4th – 7th Live Bands Fri, Sat & Sun nights!

Earlier this week my husband and I visited the new SeaCity Museum. As Southampton residents we had an invitation for free entry, I’m pleased it was free as frankly having looked forward to going for ages I was rather disappointed. With all the recent Titanic publicity and as I’ve always had an interest in her didn’t really feel I’d learnt anything new. I love ships; I used to work at sea on various liners but mainly on Chandris Line ships taking £10 Poms to OZ. There was only a very small show case about them but as so many sailed from Southampton I feel their stories and the ships that carried them deserved a much more detailed display!

Chandris was a Greek shipping line and I met my husband on board RHMS Britanis. Back in those days we had such fun as crew but everything is so much stricter for them now. Chandris eventually became Celebrity Cruises but I’m sure all you cruisers out there know that!

Raising money for The Alzheimer’s Society, Samantha Feerick from Southampton has organised a summer ball at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel Southampton on the 14th July 2012, it will include a 3 course sit down dinner and half a bottle of wine. The evening will also provide entertainment, including a Frank Sinatra tribute act, music from a band and a disco to finish the night off. I you’d like further details of this worthwhile event and how to buy tickets click here.

News from David Long who organizes the Milford on Sea food week… “It has been confirmed that Dorset brewer, Hall & Woodhouse is taking over Westover Hall Hotel in Milford on Sea. Westover Hall will close for a week from Tuesday 8th May, before reopening as The Beach House restaurant with rooms. Hall & Woodhouse says the new name has been chosen to give the business a fresh start and to reflect fully the location and history of the property”. Don’t really think that a beautiful old paneled building would really remind one of a beach house but we will see!

Hope you all enjoy the long weekend, I’m planning a massive spring clean and 3 days away from the computer but I bet neither happens!
