Lunch c/o Lidl & Aldi!

November 10, 2013

Shock horror! I love eating but hate cooking so when my discerning friend, @WinchesterLady1 came to lunch last week what could I impress her with?? JI, one of the other Ladies who Lunch, is a great cook but when she’s feeling lazy she likes to cheat occasionally! She told me about her current favourite dish…. Lidl’s Three Fish Roast!lidl (1)So I served it and very nice it was too, very creamy and lots of fish, only £5.65 and plenty for 3 people (my husband was there and even he was impressed, he usually does the cooking in our house)! I even cheated with the potatoes; I spotted them in Aldi, vacuum packed skin on new potatoes dripping in a deliciously herby and garlicky oil and only about 20 mins in a hot oven!lidl (3)As we have delicate appetites (!) we just had the most delicious Aldi Florentines with coffees to finish!

lidl (4)Isn’t Sunday the day for confession? Well I have told all except that I also bought 3 of Lidl’s Prawn Rings (only £3.99 each at the moment) for the freezer for Christmas…. anyone else got any cheating suggestions??

The Hunters Inn has recently had a refurb and has been taken over by the same people who own The Malthouse Inn, home of the famous Carols Carvery  Timsbury and The Sun Inn, Romsey. One of the Ladies who Lunch lives very near to the Hunters so two of us joined her and popped in for a quick snack lunch … The quick lunch took forever! When we gave our food order the bar staff, who were very friendly, said there was a 15 minute wait.. we eventually got our food about 45 minutes later. Why, we don’t know why as they were not busy and our order was very simple.. all we wanted was from the lighter bites choice, a bacon and brie baguette, a sharing platter of nachos, and a Thai curry!

hunters (3) hunters (2)
hunters (1) When the food arrived it was fine. We have given a low mark for the service because of the ridiculously long wait for food, the bar staff were very pleasant. Hopefully things will improve when they are more established. Largish restaurant bar and also a public bar with a separate entrance. We drank lager and cider so Cost £££

Fayre-Square is an apt name for this pub chain; they offer the most amazing value for money especially if you have loads of kids to entertain! I am recommending for all you parents (or like me, grand parents) out there but its not ideal for a romantic dinner for 2!

It was half term and we were 3 adults and 4 kids on our way home from Paultons Park. The place was heaving, masses of children but the staff were very good with them. When our 4 had finished their colouring (paper and pens provided) their pictures were displayed as promised over the bar. Our youngest, age 3, decided she didn’t like the burger and chips she had asked for and the staff replaced them with fish fingers, no problem, no extra charge!

They have so many offers which we took advantage of, I suggest you look at their web site to see them all. We adults shared a decent bottle of their wine of the month… you buy 2 large glasses and they “give” you the rest of the bottle… I think it worked out that the bottle was only about £9 and it was much enjoyed after an exhausting day out! Cost: amazingly only about £45 for the 7 of us!

As my husband is Greek 5 of us decided it would be fun to try Blue Island to celebrate my son’s birthday and his heritage! We’d head a lot about this taverna in the middle of Southampton; its obviously popular as there were a lot of young Greek students in there… all students get 20% discount on main courses. I enjoyed myself; all the young Greek males were very easy on the eye and the conversation loud and good humoured like every other taverna I have ever been in… all that was missing was the sun & sea outside the door… we had a mini tornado! We ordered the easy option, the Blue Island Special Meze at £17.90 per person (min order for 2) a house speciality of approximately twelve to fifteen traditional Greek cold and hot dishes.  The first serving was Houmous, Tzatziki, Taramasalata and Greek Salad along with loads of pitta bread. I would recommend that you don’t go mad at this stage; we did as we were starving and of course felt full very quickly! The dishes just kept on coming.. grilled Halloumi, a dish that was what I would describe as thick bacon, best Dolmades I have ever had, Calamari,  Spicy Meatballs (my favourite), Blue Island King Prawns, Pork Souvlaki, Chicken Souvlaki and Blue Island Chicken Souvla! We just couldn’t finish it all, even my husband was full and that is unheard of.

Very kindly they presented my son with a massive piece of chocolate cake surrounded by lots of scoops of different flavoured ice creams with candles on the top, the whole restaurant sang happy birthday to him. We were all going to share this but just for good measure they brought another one for the rest of us.. needless to say we ate it all, always have room for pudding! Finished with coffees.

Our drinks were beers,  2 bottles of wine, a couple of brandys and the total cost with tip was just over £££££ so very good value for money!

A fun evening and enjoyable as long as you like Greek food & atmosphere. Very important… they do not take credit cars so payment is cash or cheques only.

Geriatrics Behaving Badly on the Isle of Wight!

October 26, 2013

P1070929Last weekend 8 of us were on the island enjoying a very boozy w’end. We survived 3 days of over indulgence! The ladies on the left all used to work together way back in the early seventies, 2 of us LWL are in there somewhere??

We arrived at Bembridge on Friday afternoon after a very smooth 1 hr ferry crossing from Southampton to Cowes and a not so smooth, got lost several times, drive across the island to Warners Bembridge Coastal Hotel.

Their holidays are very popular and in our opinion offer excellent value for money! The price includes breakfast and dinner; we have always found the food to be very good and there’s lots of entertainment. We loved our rooms and were all very close so we took it in turns to host the pre dinner drinks session. We took lots of our own drinks of course…. everyone does! Our 1st session started soon after we arrived… best to drink the fizz when its still cold!

On the first evening the entertainment in the bar was a singer/guitarist who we thought was amazing mainly because he sang everything we requested, there was lots of dancing and had absolutely nothing to do with how much we had drunk!

P1070908On Saturday 5 of us went to see the magnificent Osborne House, shame it was wet as the grounds are lovely.

P1070932Saturday’s evening entertainment in the main ballroom was The Rolling Clones! A tribute band, not wonderful but amusing and when we saw them later in the bar “Mick” looked about 12! In the bar was a really good country singer, Country Jo,P1070953 (he was my favourite act of the whole weekend) but cant find him on Google, made me want to start line dancing again Yee Har! A lot more dancing was done…. and drinking.

Sunday again was wet but we still walked to the nearby pub crab.lobsterThe Crab & Lobster  for a lunch of their famour crab sandwiches. We decided they are living on their reputation; they were not very busy for a Sunday lunch time; the crab sandwiches were very thick but mainly filled with crab paste, they used to be bursting with crab meat! The nights  entertainment was Songs from the Musicals. At shows like this it always strikes me just how many very talented singers there are around who most probably just by bad luck are not appearing on the London stage; it was a great show.

mattandcatlogo1On Monday on the way back to the ferry it was fun to meet up with the famed Matt & Cat! They are our compatriots across The Solent; they run a similar web page to ours reviewing restaurants on the island; hopefully they’ll forgive me for the encroachment into their territory. As you can imagine we had a lot to talk about. We met at their recommendation in the delightful Chocolate Apothecary…. I can’t have been well, I only had black coffee! If you are ever in Ryde it is the place to go for rather special home made chocolates and cakes.

We got home about 2.0 pm exhausted and aching all over…. it was obviously all the dancing!

On Tues day night we went out again to Blue Island a Greek restaurant in Southampton to celebrate my son’s birthday……. review will be ready soon!

Still battling to get all the reviews up to date on the Blog, thank you for your patience. Think that for some reason you may find the find the photos in the reviews are thumbnail or different sizes, just refresh the page & hopefully that will solve it….. my computing life is such a learning curve at the moment #wardingoffsenility?

October 2013 Again staying at Warners so remembering the crab sandwiches we returned for a lunch time snack. Sadly the sandwiches are still about the same price but have hardy any crab in them! They were thick but this was the bread! If you wanted to just have white meat in them that would have been an extra £1.95 brining the price of a sandwich up to £9.50! They were not busy at all; perhaps it was the weather or perhaps like me folks have decided things aint what they used to be! Had to down grade from a Bronze to 14/25 Cost with drinks £££. CJ Perhaps only fair to advise that we did only have sandwiches, perhaps their meals are good. We did see an amazing looking fish platter but it was £62 for two.

March 2010 We were staying at Warners, Bembridge for the weekend and strolled along to this famous pub nearby.  It was voted IOW Pub of the year 2010 in the Good Pub Guide!  Situated on the coast it enjoys sea views over Bembridge Ledge. They have an extensive menu with seafood being a speciality.  Cosy traditional beamed interior and booking is advisable, although we did manage to find a table.  We only needed a snack as we were on half board at Warners!  From the snack menu the crab sandwiches are £8.00, although a bit expensive there was plenty of crab and served with salad garnish.  The thing that impressed us most was the service and returning the next day for just a drink the barman remembered what we had the day before!  Could it have been the way I asked for our G & T’s to be served??  Regular readers of the site know about our preference!!

Worth a visit if you are in the area, particularly in the summer for outside eating and fab views!

Cost £££(Warners was very good too!)

Bishops Waltham is always worth a visit; it is such a pretty little town and even more attractive when you know there is delicious Italian cuisine on offer! The pretty little restaurant Piccola Roma is a great find; we really enjoyed our lunch and the prices are very reasonable.

We sat at a window table and enjoyed a G & T whilst choosing from the Lunchtime special menu….. any pizza or pasta for just £6.50 and from the A la carte. (They also have an early bird deal from 5-7 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Two for One on Pizza and Pasta, eat in, and also Feel Good Thursday, any pizza and dessert £10 all night!)

For our starters we chose Olive Marinate, an assortment of plumptious mixed olives marinated in oil, herbs and garlic and also Bruschetta Mista, a trio of different bruschetta – tomato, olives and peppers. This dish was one of the best bruschettas we have ever tasted…. as usual we shared the dishes as we also did with our mains. A Capricciosa Pizza (Tomato, Mozzarella, Mushroom, Ham, Olives and Egg) and Penne pasta with Gorgonzola & Ruchetta. We chose an Insalata di  Rucola  (a Rocket leaf salad topped with parmesan shaving and balsamic syrup dressing) to accompany these delicious dishes. The flavours were excellent; the pasta rich and creamy and the pizza thin and crispy and very generous portions, we even took some of the pizza home… it’s not often husband gets a treat! We washed this down with a large glass of house white.

There is a good pudding choice; we shared a Warm Orange Cake served with Italian Vanilla Ice Cream… scrumptious! What a lovely lunch, attractive surroundings and friendly staff so we recommend you try Piccola Roma very soon especially as we have persuaded them to participate in our Discount Directory.
